An A4 page comes out at about 1240 × 1754 px at 150 DPI, or 2480 × 3508 px at 300 DPI. Pick Screen for previews and chat, Print for anything that will be printed or zoomed into.
A PDF page has no pixels of its own; it is drawn fresh at whatever size you ask for. 96 DPI matches a typical screen and keeps files small. 150 DPI is sharp enough for slides, documents, and most websites. 300 DPI matches print and is the right choice if someone will zoom in or print the result.
Scanned PDFs are already pictures, so rendering them at a higher DPI than the scan cannot add detail. If a scan looks soft at 300 DPI, the original scan was soft too.
